✴ Folk music - Smetana’s rollicking music from his opera Bartered Bride uses traditional Bohemian dances.
✴ Overcoming adversity - Smetana, who is regarded as the father of Czech national music, wrote masterpieces such as The Moldau after he became completely deaf.
✴ Musical archaeologist - As a conductor, Mendelssohn “rediscovered” works such as Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Schubert’s Ninth Symphony.
