The VSO season concludes with Mahler’s monumental 6th Symphony. This haunting work has been called prophetic and autobiographical, allegedly containing a musical depiction of Mahler’s wife Alma and foretelling the great tragedies of Mahler's life. The heroic grandeur and powerful sweep of this masterpiece will create a concert-going experience like no other.
One of the most intriguing instruments in this massive orchestra is the hammer, representing the "hammer blows of fate" that strike down the hero. Percussionists typically construct an enormous hammer and wooden box, and the playing of this instrument is one of the most riveting moments in all of music.
