Teaching A Young Bass Student

The South Georgia String Project serves an after-school music program where parents and children can easily access affordable string instrument instruction, while also providing mentored teaching experiences for music students at Valdosta State University. The South Georgia String Project, led by Director and Master Teacher Dr. Kristin Pfeifer Yu, is a joint venture of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and the Department of Music at VSU.

Semester Registration Fee

Tuition due by the first day of class


Explorers (A & B): $90 ($140 maximum for families)

Tuition includes

  • Group class instruction (2 times per week on Monday and Wednesday)
  • Private Lesson Instruction (2 times per semester, 30 minutes each)
  • SGSP Gift

Intermezzo and Chamber Strings: $70 ($140 maximum for families)

Tuition includes

  • Group class instruction (2 times per week on Monday and Wednesday)
  • SGSP Gift

VSYO: $70 ($140 maximum for families)

Tuition includes

  • Full orchestra rehearsal on Monday
  • SGSP Gift

Beginner Classes

Come one, come all! Beginner classes are from any student, ages 8 to adult. Classes are broken into Explorers A and Explorers B.

Explorers A Weekly Schedule

Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:30-5:20pm

Explorers B Weekly Schedule

Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:30-5:20pm

  • All Strings, Fine Arts Building, Band Room

**Note: Explorers B is the second semester course for students who completed Explorers A with fewer than six absences. Prerequisite skills: Twinkle Variations, D major scale, and reading abilities up to page 15 of the Essential Elements Book One**

Returning and/or Experienced Students

Placement is by audition or by recommendation of the Director, Master Teacher, Principal Conductor. All students in ensembles should regularly take private lessons. Private lessons are arranged separately.

Intermezzo Strings Weekly Schedule

Auditions are not required, 2nd and 3rd year of playing. Prerequisite skills: Essential Elements Book One, up to page 31.

Wednesdays

  • Orchestra, 5:30-6:20pm

Chamber Strings Weekly Schedule

Auditions are required, 4th and 5th year of playing and beyond.

Valdosta Symphony Youth Orchestra (VSYO) Weekly Schedule

VSYO is the full orchestra for high school, VSU, and advanced SGSP students and adults. Participating students must also play in their public school ensembles (if offered). Auditions are required to participate in the VSYO, please see Audition Requirements.
